FAQ

FAQ

Is ElastOS open source?

Yes. ElastOS is open source under the MIT licence. Anyone can read, run, change and share the code. Read the licence.

What is it written in?

The Runtime, the trusted core, is written in Rust. Home and its Apps are web code that runs in sandboxed frames. How ElastOS works

Does it cost anything?

No. ElastOS is free to install and use. Hosted AI models are optional and are paid to their provider with your own API key.

Do I need crypto to use it?

No. You can use Home, People, Chat, Library, Documents and Assistant without any tokens. Wallet is there if you want it.

Who can read my data?

Your files stay on your computer. Local AI models answer on your computer. ElastOS has no account server. Today, software running as your computer account, and the computer’s administrator, can still read your data even while Home is locked. See Security and privacy.

Can I use it on Windows?

Not yet. The plan is to run ElastOS inside WSL2 with a small Windows launcher. See Windows.

Can I use it on my phone?

Home has a touch layout for small screens. A phone needs an HTTPS address to reach Home, which 2.0.0 does not set up yet. See Using Home.

Is this the same as PC2?

PC2 was ElastOS v1, the proof of concept. ElastOS is one lasting system, built in stages: v1 proved it, v2 builds it for real, and v3 is where it is headed. v2 is a new install, not an upgrade of PC2. See ElastOS in stages.

Who builds it, and who pays for it?

Elacity Labs builds ElastOS under a mandate from the Elastos DAO. ELA holders elect the DAO’s council, and the council funds the work. See the roadmap and reports.

What is the World Computer?

Millions of personal computers, each owned by its user, that work together like one computer, with no company in the middle. Each ElastOS Home is one of them. See The mission.

What is Elacity Exchange?

If ElastOS is your home, Elacity is the shop. It is the market we are building between ElastOS computers, so Homes can trade with each other through a protocol rather than a company store. See Elacity Exchange.

How do I build an App?

See Developers.
